UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk the Almannagjá gorge — the visible rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Site of the world's oldest parliament (Alþingi, est. 930 AD). Optional: snorkel the crystal-clear Silfra fissure (advance booking required).
Haukadalur geothermal valley. Watch Strokkur erupt every 5–10 minutes, shooting boiling water 15–40 m into the air. The Great Geysir nearby gave the English word "geyser" to the world. Walk the boardwalk past colourful hot springs and steaming fumaroles.
The Golden Waterfall — the Hvítá river drops 32 m in two tiers into a dramatic 70 m deep canyon. Walk the upper panoramic path or the lower mist-soaked platform. On sunny days rainbow arcs span the gorge. Flow can reach 140 m³/s in summer.
A 6,500-year-old explosion crater, 55 m deep and 170 m wide, with vivid red and ochre walls plunging to a turquoise-green lake. Walk the full 1 km rim or descend to the lake floor via a steep zigzag path. Entry ≈ €7.

Saisonalität & Wetter
Up to 22 hours of daylight in June. All paths open, wildflowers blooming, Gullfoss at high flow. Most crowded — depart early (before 9am) to beat coach tours at Geysir and Gullfoss.
Golden foliage in the valleys, far fewer crowds. Northern Lights become possible from late August. Weather increasingly unpredictable — waterproofs are essential.
Snow-covered Þingvellir is breathtaking. Only 4–5 hours of daylight in December. Good Northern Lights odds on clear nights. Microspikes needed on icy paths. Some trails temporarily closed.
Waterfalls at peak flow from snowmelt. Bright green hills returning. Quieter than summer. Paths at Þingvellir reopen as ice melts — ideal photography conditions.
