2
Seljalandsfoss

A 60 m waterfall you can walk completely behind — one of Iceland's most unique experiences. A 10-minute walk north leads to Gljúfrabúi, a hidden slot-canyon waterfall tucked inside a gorge, often missed by tour groups. Path behind the falls is closed Nov–Mar due to ice.

3
Skógafoss

One of Iceland's largest waterfalls — 60 m tall and 25 m wide. Climb the 370-step staircase on the east side for sweeping panoramic views over the South Coast and the start of the famous Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail. Rainbow forms in the mist at the base on sunny days.

4
Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

Iceland's most dramatic beach — jet-black volcanic sand, the Reynisdrangar sea stacks (trolls turned to stone by sunlight, according to legend), and a cave of interlocking hexagonal basalt columns. ⚠️ SNEAKER WAVE DANGER: waves arrive without warning. Never turn your back to the sea; stay at least 30 m from the water's edge at all times.

5
Vík í Mýrdal

Iceland's southernmost village (pop. ~300). The red-roofed Reyniskirkja church sits on the hillside with stunning coastal panoramas. Best place to stop for lunch, fuel and supplies. The beach east of town is also black sand and slightly safer than Reynisfjara.

6
Dyrhólaey Promontory

A 120 m volcanic headland with a massive natural rock arch large enough for small planes to fly through. The lighthouse at the top offers the single best 360° panoramic view on the South Coast — on clear days you can see the Westman Islands and distant glaciers. Home to one of Iceland's largest puffin colonies (May–Aug). May be partially closed during nesting season.

What to bring

Seasonality & weather

☀️
Summer (Jun–Aug)

Long daylight (up to 22h in June) — perfect for photography at every stop. All paths fully open including behind Seljalandsfoss. Puffins nesting at Dyrhólaey and Vík cliffs (May–Aug). Most crowded season.

🍂
Autumn (Sep–Oct)

Dramatic moody skies ideal for landscape photography. Possible Northern Lights on the return drive after dark. Puffins have departed. Fewer crowds, still pleasant conditions.

❄️
Winter (Nov–Mar)

Path behind Seljalandsfoss closed (ice risk). Only 5–6 hours daylight in December. Snow and ice possible at all stops. Northern Lights possible on clear nights. Fewer tourists. Skógafoss can partially freeze — spectacular sight.

🌱
Spring (Apr–May)

Waterfalls at maximum volume from snowmelt. Puffins arriving at Vík from late April. Path behind Seljalandsfoss reopens. Quieter than summer with improving weather.

Traveler reviews

5.0

Twelve hours and every single one was spectacular. Walking behind Seljalandsfoss was surreal — I was completely soaked and laughing the whole time. Our driver found Gljúfrabúi, the hidden waterfall, which we never would have discovered alone. Reynisfjara was hauntingly beautiful; our driver's safety briefing about the sneaker waves was genuinely important.

The private tour made all the difference. At Skógafoss our guide waited while we climbed all 370 steps — the view from the top is worth every step. He also knew a hidden angle at Dyrhólaey where we photographed the arch with no one else in frame. Impossible on a bus tour.

Reynisfjara was unlike anything in my life. Those black basalt columns, the sea stacks, the raw power of the Atlantic. Our driver explained the geological history of each site in detail. The 12 hours genuinely felt like 4. I would do this tour again tomorrow.
