Mapa de la ruta

1
Hallgrímskirkja

Reykjavík's most iconic landmark — a Lutheran church whose facade is modelled on basalt lava columns. Construction started 1945, completed 1986. Take the elevator to the observation tower (73 m) for a 360° panoramic view over the city's colourful rooftops, the sea, and surrounding mountains. The 5,275-pipe organ (1992) is one of the largest in the world. The Leifur Eiríksson statue outside is a 1930 gift from the USA.

2
Harpa Concert Hall

Opened in 2011. Designed by Henning Larsen Architects with artist Ólafur Elíasson, who created the iconic geometric glass honeycomb facade that changes colour with the sky and sea. Winner of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture (Mies van der Rohe Award) 2013. Home of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and Icelandic Opera. The public atrium is free to enter.

3
Sun Voyager (Sólfar)

A gleaming stainless-steel sculpture on the seafront by Jón Gunnar Árnason, unveiled in 1990 for Reykjavík's 200th anniversary. Described by the artist as "a dream of hope, progress and freedom — a homage to the sun." Not a Viking ship but an idealized sun-voyager setting out toward the horizon. The backdrop of Mount Esja across the bay makes this one of the most photographed spots in Iceland.

4
Perlan Museum

A striking glass dome on Öskjuhlíð hill, built atop six massive geothermal hot water tanks. Home to the Wonders of Iceland exhibition: a real walk-through ice cave (Iceland's only man-made glacier tunnel), a 360° Northern Lights planetarium show, a geyser model, earthquake simulator, and glacier/ocean exhibitions. The free outdoor observation deck on the 4th floor gives the best elevated panorama over all of Reykjavík.

5
Tjörnin Pond

A natural freshwater lake in the city centre, home to 40+ bird species year-round including Arctic terns, whooper swans, eider ducks and greylag geese. Partially geothermally heated so it rarely fully freezes. Reykjavík City Hall (with a large free relief map of Iceland inside) sits on its northern edge, and Parliament House is steps away. One of the most tranquil and photogenic spots in the city.

The perfect introduction to Reykjavík. Our driver had a story for every building and street corner. The Hallgrímskirkja tower view is stunning — you understand the whole city layout in one glance. The ice cave at Perlan was completely unexpected and absolutely worth it. We ended at the Sun Voyager at golden hour and it was a perfect final image.

Harpa Concert Hall is a masterpiece of architecture — the Ólafur Elíasson glass facade has to be seen in person. Our driver explained how the building was nearly cancelled in the 2008 financial crash and only completed because abandoning it half-finished would have cost more. Tjörnin pond with the Parliament backdrop is a perfect quiet moment between the landmark visits.

We only had one day in Reykjavík before flying to the countryside, so this 2-hour tour was ideal. Saw everything important, got great photos, and our driver gave us a list of restaurant recommendations for the evening. The Perlan observation deck is free and the best viewpoint in the city. Would have loved more time at the National Museum.
